AJS: Elliot, Charles (1801-1875), cousin of Admiral George Elliot, wasûmidshipman in Minden at the bombardment of Algiers in 1816 and lieutenantûon the Jamaica station in 1822. In 1828 more or less retired from theûNavy, being employed by the Foreign and Colonial Office. In 1830-33 wasûprotectore of slaves in Guiana, and in 1837 became Plenipotentiary andûChief Superintendent in the China Trade Commission, being superseded byûSir Henry Potinger in 1841. Later Governor of Bermuda 1846-54, Trinidadû1854-56 and St Helena 1863-69. In 1865 made KCB and Admiral.
