An invaluable work of reference, describing the work and achievements of all the significant marine hydrographers and nautical surveyors (254 individuals). The book is divided into two parts, covering the periods 1750-1830 and 1830-85. It is particularly useful in providing information about the lesser-known hydrographers of the nineteenth century. The appendices include a chronological table of the prinicipal geographical discoveries and a description of the United States coast survey. Dawson worked for many years in the Admiralty Hydrographic Department and published a pilot for the Bay of Bengal in 1887.
