The term 'country trade' used in the first book, was defined by the author: '...to include vessels owned by Englishmen resident in India, as well as purely Indian ships, and seems to have applied as far back as the end of the seventeenth century'. Commander Coates was killed in action on the 15th July 1917, when HMS Redbreast was torpedoed in the Eastern Mediterranean.
