1 Serres (D.) & (J.T.) Liber Nauticus and Instructor in the Art of Marine Drawing.
1805 rp 1979,
viii + ii + 28pp text, with 41 plates (detailed views of warships and a series of seascapes), substantial format 45cm x 33cm, attractive embossed cloth, dw, Quarm (R.) & Wilcox (S.) Masters of the Sea British Marine Watercolours, 1987. See references in this work to Serres..The publication in 1805 of the Liber Nauticus in the Art of Marine Drawing by John Thomas Serres indicates that by the end of the eighteenth century marine drawing was accepted as a distinct and legitimate specialization for artist and amateur alike. Part I describes in detail, with plates, the parts of a ship, the drawing of water, how ships sail, rates or classes of ships, and the different ranks of admirals. Part II consists of twenty-four plates in aquatint after drawings by his long-dead father Dominic Serres 'made expressly for the instruction of a Nobleman', and presumably to be copied: In short, so comprehensive is this work, that there is scarcely any kind of bark, which floats on the water, that is not delineated-a circumstance that must greatly facilitate the study of Marine Drawing in general.
