Second edition 1726, otherûeditions 1755, 1766, 1784, 1794 and 1840.ûPublisher: One of the earliest English books on naval architecture,ûpreceded only (if we ignore Deane's manuscript treatise) by EdmundûBushell's Complete Ship-wright (1664) and John Hardingham's TheûAccomplish'd Ship-Wright and Mariner (1706). Sutherland came from a familyûof shipwrights and was the author of another book on shipbuilding:ûBritain's Glory, or Ship-building Unvail'd, first published in 1717.ûWitt Collection: Sutherland was a shipwright and practical seaman. Hisûfather and grandfather had both been shipwrights in the Royal yards and heûhimself had been master carpenter aboard three of H.M. ships and forûfifteen years busied himself with "the inspection and direction of theûwork done by part of the shipwrights at Portsmouth and Deptford yards".
