3 Anon. RP A Narrative of the Loss of the Kent East Indiaman, by fire, in the Bay of Biscay on 1st March 1825.
1825 rp 1971, 
78pp, frontis, blue cloth. AJS: The Kent, a fine new ship of 1,350 tons under the command of Captain Henry Cobb, left the Downs on the 19th February, 1825, bound for Bengal and the Far East. On board were 473 officers and men of the 31st infantry regiment with their families, and twenty private passengers. The crew numbered 148. This narrative gives a terrifying account of the vessel catching fire in the Bay of Biscay and subsequently foundering. A second anonymous edition was published in 1842. It was followed by a third in 1859, which ientifies the author who signed the letter 'Servatus' as Lieutenant-General Sir Duncan Macgregor, KCB.

NMM Cat, Vol 5, Pt 1, entry 1798: Particularly of the Glorious First of June Action. Appendices include: (1) List of French ships taken; (2) Full casualties in the British fleet; (3) Howe's despatch of 2 June to the Admiralty; (4) Full list of officers in each ship which took part; (5) The French line of battle; (6) Reproduction of Jean Bon Saint-Andre's journal entry for 1 June on board Le Montagne. AJS: A contemporary account of Lord Howe's victory over the French fleet under Admiral Villaret-Joyeuse in the Glorious First of June action, 1794, and the events before and after. The work is enhanced by the large folding engraved plate which shews the dispositions and tactics of the opposing fleets during the course of the action. The text also contains a full list of officers on board each of the thirty-eight British ships present, from the flagship, Queen Charlotte, 100, to the Ranger, cutter.

5 Anon. RP A Narrative of the Proceedings of the British Fleet Commanded by Admiral Sir John Jervis KB in the Late Action with the Spanish Fleet 1797.
1797 rp 1971, 
32pp, 8 folding engraved plates, large format (26.5cm x 19.5cm), attractive production, pale blue cloth. NMM Cat, Vol 5, Pt 1, entry 1799: The three appendices comprise: return of killed and wounded on board the British ships; ships and commanders of both fleets. AJS: The best contemporary account of the famous action off Cape St Vincent, in which four Spanish ships of the line, including two 112s, were taken. The accompanying plans, shewing the positions of both fleets at different stages in the action, are particularly interesting. Although published anonymously, the work was actually written by Colonel John Drinkwater-Bethune, better known for his history of the Siege of Gibraltar in the previous war. As a member of General Eliot's staff, Bethune was returning from the Mediterranean in a frigate when he became an eyewitness of the battle.

300pp, 3 original photographs mounted in text, large format (26.5cm x 21cm), original red half calf, front board almost detached, contents tight and clean. Colledge: Charybdis 2nd class cruiser 4,360 tons, 320 x 49.5ft, 2-6in, 8-4.7in, 8-6dpr. Sheerness DY 16/06/1893. Converted 03/1918 to cargo carrier, returned to RN 12/1919. Sold 27/01/1922 at Bermuda; resold 10/1923 and BU in Holland. Kept in diary form by one of the seaman, so a personal account of events rather than a formal journal. Three original photographs (1) View of the vessel. (2) The Ship's Company at Halifax. (3) Deck scene with members of the crew. The diary is written in a clear neat hand. 21st Apr 1902. Captain's inspection at Chatham then sets off for Liverpool and boards S.S. Lake Manitoba along with 300 emigrants. Describes the voyage, social activity, life on board. 2nd May. Sights Nova Scotia, describes transfer into Charybdis, Bandmaster drinks too much and has an accident. 3rd-12th May. Preparing ship, coaling, taking on stores, cleaning etc. 13th May. At sea. Cleared for action, a number of accidents, sights foreign warships. Jun 8th-11th. Bad weather, fog, crew members arrested for drunkeness. Jun 20th-1st Jul. Preparations for King's coronation. Jul 2nd-23rd Jul. From St Johns to St Pierre, St George's Bay, Bonne Bay, caught salmon poachers. At Hawke's Bay helped build road to Pond River. 2nd Aug. Saw icebergs and fired at them with 4.7in with no effect. 7th Aug. Two marines caught stealing spirits and both received prison sentences. 9th Aug. Dressed ship for coronation, ship lit up at night, searchlights, boatswain rowed around ship playing the bagpipes, then fireworks. 28th Aug. Landed at Forteau Bay to repair monument to men lost in the wreck of HMS Lily (1888). 6th Sep. Officers went caribou shooting. Ship's company collected money for artificial leg for girl at Forteau. 13th Sep. Prisoners taken on board. Cleared for action, gunnery practice, small arms training, boat racing, stoker fell down funnel casing. 17th Oct. Saw total eclipse of moon. Landed maxim gun on field travelling carriage. 18th-31st Oct. At sea torpedo training. 31st Oct. Court martial of Sergeant of Marines for threatening behaviour. 27th Nov. Left Halifax for Bermuda, weather bad. Coaled at St Lucia then left for Trinidad on account of the trouble with Venezuela. 7th Dec. At Trinidad and Venezuelan Gunboat "Bolivar" in harbour (describes cutting-out force and taking of the vessel in detail). 13th Dec. At Puerto Cabello and sent message ashore that if they did not make an apology for imprisoning British subjects and looting, then the town would be bombarded (3pp description). It was bombarded and the rebels surrendered along with a General Castillo. Destroyed anything of use, blew up two buildings, collected weapons and curios. 16th Dec. At Curacoa. 23rd Dec. Manned and armed de Maya a Venezuelian boat which was captured, attempted to capture schooner loaded with troops and ammunition but arrived after the vessel had sailed, fighting continued in town. 5th Jan 1903. At Bermuda, various foreign warships, visited the Pitch Lakes. 6th-13th Feb. At sea. Torpedo and heavy gun practice. HMS Ariadne, Retribution, Quail and Rocket present. 5th Mar. To Jamaica, numerous ship movements both British and foreign. 8th Apr. Leading hand of the riggers committed suicide. 15th Apr. An ERA was found dead in shallow water with a wound at the back of his head. 17th-27th Apr. Employed refitting ship (full description). 3rd Jun. Fire in sick berth and shelf containing several bottles of acids broke and made an explosion. 17th Jun. Preparing for sea and left for Halifax. 26th Jun. Arrived St Johns. Small arms practice, boat pulling, inspection of arms. 21st Jul. Hawkes Bay. Saw iceberg at mouth of harbour, it turned over. 13th Aug. Commodore's cook died of heart failure, full military funeral, fired three volleys and returned to ship. 29th Aug. Landed party of 20 seamen to search for a Miss Prowse who had escaped from a lunatic asylum. 30th Sep. Ball held on board. 26th Oct. Fire broke out ashore, landed every available man. 1st Dec. Prepared to sail to Bermuda. 11th Dec. At Havanna, Cuba, lay close to the wreck of the USS Maine which was blown up while lying at anchor there. 18th Dec. Port Royal, Jamaica. Natives coaling ship, German warships arrive. 25th Dec. Commodore and Officers went the rounds to see how the messes were decorated. Band was playing and there was singing and dancing, with native washerwomen singing. 28th Dec. San Domingo. Cleared for action as rebellion ashore, American ship in harbour guarding their interests. 29th Dec. Heavy firing and fighting ashore. 1904 1st Jan. American ships Alabama and Massachusetts arrived. 6th Jan. At sea on manouvres HMS Good Hope, Drake, Donegal, Berwick and Ariadne, then to Barbadoes. 11th Jan. Manouvres continued under Admiral Douglas. 12th Jan. Fleet at Trinidad, joined by HMS Alert and Fantome. 20th Jan. Court of Enquiry into lost signal book. 23rd Jan. Steam launch belonging to the Retribution ran into wire hawser, one man either drowned or the sharks got him. Another man broke a leg and the Captain sustained scalp wounds. 2nd Feb. Sailing regatta for Vice and Rear Admirals cups, various vessels capsized. 4th Feb. To Bermuda for refitting. 6th Feb-26th Apr. Refitting. Describes each day the worked involved. 28th Apr Halifax. Entered harbour and made fast to No 4 jetty. Coaling ship. 10th May. Guard of Honour for departure of Sir Cavendish Boyle (Governor of Newfoundland) to take up his new appointment at Mauritius. He was saluted with 17 guns as he passed our ship. 24th May. Left for St Pierre. 27th May. Passed wreckage of SS Hibernian which ran ashore at Codroy. 31st May. 4" hemp hawser which was secured to kedge anchor got foul of the screw. 1st Jun. Divers went down to clear screw, searched for anchor. 14th Jun. Port-aux-Basques. HMS Fantome went to assistance of a schooner which was on a reef which she managed to get clear. 15th Jun. Left for White Bear river. 18th Jun. Thick fog. Narrowly escaped collision with a liner, we burnt searchlights and fired 6pdr blank charges sounding every 20 minutes. 24th Jun. Fired 21 gun salute for Empire Day. 8th-18th Jul. Inspection of arms, gunnery, remounted 4.7in gun, cleaned ship. 7th Aug. A party of four of us got leave to take a day to fish for salmon, the largest we caught was 14lb. 8th Sep. Port Saunders, St Johns Bay, Forteau Bay. 9th Sep. Dressed ship for anniversary of King's coronation. 26th Sep. SS Siberian arrived with new governor for Nfld Sir W. McGregor. 13th Oct. Commodore and Governor went on whale hunt and caught one whale weighing about 22 tons. 27th Oct. Received special orders in consequence of Russian outrage in the North Sea, prepare for coaling, leave cancelled. 3rd Nov. Hoisted garlands for 1st Lieut marriage. Marriage took place in C-of-E Cathedral the bride and bridegroom passed through archways formed by the officers swords and marines with bayonets the carriage was drawn by bluejackets from the church to the brides house. 10th Dec. PO 2nd cl from Ariadne got drowned in the stag channel through falling overboard from a boat being towed back to the ship. 19th-24th Dec. Painting ship. 28th Dec. Coaling ship. 1905. 4th Jan. Ariadne and Charybdis left for Barbadoes. 9th Jan. Did not drill with fleet as many men down with fever. 18th Jan. Gunnery practice (described in detail) Aridane 100 rounds and got 22 hits. Charybdis 90 rounds and got 27 hits. Prometheus 90 rounds and got 22 hits. 24th Jan. To Grenada 1st Mar. Prepared for sea and left Bermuda for England. 12th Mar. Entered Plymouth and saluted Admiral with 19 guns. 15th Mar. Arrived at Sheerness. 18th Mar. No 1 Basin at Chatham. 24th Mar. Paid all money due to us and left ship at 9.30am.

AJS: A rare and interesting contemporary French account of the bitter struggle between England and France for command of the Indian Ocean during a critical stage of the American War of Independence. In five fleet actions, between February 1782 and June 1783, the British ships under Sir Edward Hughes and the French under the redoutable Admiral Suffren, for for mastery. This work describes the crucial events of the summer of 1782, which culminated in the actions of Negapatam and Trincomalee and Suffren's seizure of Trincomalee. Included are valuable lists of the French warships engaged, their armament and commanders.

39pp, decorated title page, small format, later grey paper wrappers. NMM Cat, Vol 5, Pt 1, entry 672: The narrative is of the action off Dover, 29 May 1652. Bibliotheca Nautica, 1930, Part 2, entry 569: Thirty-five pages of this narrative relate to the Battle off Dover fought on 17th May, 1652, although a state of war had not been declared. The immediate cause of the battle was Admiral Tromp's declining to lower his flag in salute to the British colours. A slight advantage remained with the English, who captured one Dutch vessel without losing any themselves.
