Admiralty. Strictly Confidential No.1187. Torpedo Manual for Her Majesty's Fleet, in Three Volumes. Volune III. - Whitehead Torpedoes. 1881, viii + 186pp, 29 plates (in colour), 6 diags, with additional unlisted water colour view of a torpedo inserted at end, pocket at rear of book with drawings inserted, corrections and annotations in the text in a contemporary hand, original embossed blue cloth, spine neatly repaired. AJS: An early text book with the printed instruction: This book is not to be given, lent, or shown to any person not in HM Service. Describes in detail the 16-Inch Torpedo, 14-Inch Torpedo, 14 Inch Fiume Torpedo and 14 Inch Torpedo-Mark II. Along with the various methods of discharging torpedoes, air pumps, and other technical matter. NB: Construction rights of Whitehead's torpedo were sold to Great Britain in 1870, and later to all the other leading naval powers. Under Whitehead's direction a branch of his factory in Fiume was established at Weymouth, England, in 1890 where considerable improvements in performance were added. Range and speed were greatly increased by using a mixture of steam and oil vapour with the original compressed air to give a 'hot' run instead of the original 'cold' run under compressed air only. A course holding ability was introduced by the use of a small gyroscope which controlled the vertical rudder and held the torpdeo on a fixed course, and the torpedo could be set to run at a predetermined depth by the introduction of a hydrostatic valve actuated by water pressure and linked to the horizontal rudders. With a Whitehead Torpedo and Electric Light Certificate (HMS Excellent, 9th June, 1884) to Chief Engineer George, Horatio, Weeks. Signed by Captain Albert H. Markham. Price:
