For more information on the publication of this title (and later editions) see pp46-48 of this excellent bibliography. AJS: An invaluable contemporary record of French, Dutch, Spanish, Danish and British warships and privateers lost, captured or destroyed during the French Revolutionary War. The information is clearly arranged year by year, with details of where, when and by whom the event occurred. Particularly valuable are the lists shewing the enemy privateers taken or destroyed. The second part is an analysis of enemy colonies captured and treaties signed during the war. Steel first published the Naval Chronologist in 1801, with revised editions appearing in 1803, 1805, 1806 and 1825. This reprint of the 1801 edition makes available a standard reference work to the period at an affordable price.

Much of this narrative concerns the events of the Second Dutch War but there are important chapters on naval administration and an excellent bibliography of the sources for the period 1668-67. The author wrote this book four years after graduating at Cambridge. He later rose to become deputy Supreme Commander of the Allied forces in World War II and the Chief of the Air Staff.
