Colledge: Charybdis 2nd class cruiser 4,360 tons, 320 x 49.5ft, 2-6in, 8-4.7in, 8-6dpr. Sheerness DY 16/06/1893. Converted 03/1918 to cargo carrier, returned to RN 12/1919. Sold 27/01/1922 at Bermuda; resold 10/1923 and BU in Holland. Kept in diary form by one of the seaman, so a personal account of events rather than a formal journal. Three original photographs (1) View of the vessel. (2) The Ship's Company at Halifax. (3) Deck scene with members of the crew. The diary is written in a clear neat hand. 21st Apr 1902. Captain's inspection at Chatham then sets off for Liverpool and boards S.S. Lake Manitoba along with 300 emigrants. Describes the voyage, social activity, life on board. 2nd May. Sights Nova Scotia, describes transfer into Charybdis, Bandmaster drinks too much and has an accident. 3rd-12th May. Preparing ship, coaling, taking on stores, cleaning etc. 13th May. At sea. Cleared for action, a number of accidents, sights foreign warships. Jun 8th-11th. Bad weather, fog, crew members arrested for drunkeness. Jun 20th-1st Jul. Preparations for King's coronation. Jul 2nd-23rd Jul. From St Johns to St Pierre, St George's Bay, Bonne Bay, caught salmon poachers. At Hawke's Bay helped build road to Pond River. 2nd Aug. Saw icebergs and fired at them with 4.7in with no effect. 7th Aug. Two marines caught stealing spirits and both received prison sentences. 9th Aug. Dressed ship for coronation, ship lit up at night, searchlights, boatswain rowed around ship playing the bagpipes, then fireworks. 28th Aug. Landed at Forteau Bay to repair monument to men lost in the wreck of HMS Lily (1888). 6th Sep. Officers went caribou shooting. Ship's company collected money for artificial leg for girl at Forteau. 13th Sep. Prisoners taken on board. At Trinidad and Venezuelan Gunboat "Bolivar" in harbour (describes cutting-out force and taking of the vessel in detail). 13th Dec. At Puerto Cabello and sent message ashore that if they did not make an apology for imprisoning British subjects and looting, then the town would be bombarded (3pp description). It was bombarded and the rebels surrendered along with a General Castillo. Destroyed anything of use, blew up two buildings, collected weapons and curios. 16th Dec. At Curacoa. 23rd Dec. Manned and armed de Maya a Venezuelian boat which was captured, attempted to capture schooner loaded with troops and ammunition but arrived after the vessel had sailed, fighting continued in town. 5th Jan 1903. At Bermuda, various foreign warships, visited the Pitch Lakes. 6th-13th Feb. At sea. Torpedo and heavy gun practice. HMS Ariadne, Retribution, Quail and Rocket present. 5th Mar. To Jamaica, numerous ship movements both British and foreign. 8th Apr. Leading hand of the riggers committed suicide. 15th Apr. An ERA was found dead in shallow water with a wound at the back of his head. 17th-27th Apr. Employed refitting ship (full description). 3rd Jun. Bibliotheca Nautica, 1930, Part 2, entry 569: Thirty-five pages of this narrative relate to the Battle off Dover fought on 17th May, 1652, although a state of war had not been declared. The immediate cause of the battle was Admiral Tromp's declining to lower his flag in salute to the British colours. A slight advantage remained with the English, who captured one Dutch vessel without losing any themselves.

Anon. RP A Narrative of the Loss of the Kent East Indiaman, by fire, in the Bay of Biscay on 1st March 1825.

78pp, frontis, blue cloth. AJS: The Kent, a fine new ship of 1,350 tons under the command of Captain Henry Cobb, left the Downs on the 19th February, 1825, bound for Bengal and the Far East. On board were 473 officers and men of the 31st infantry regiment with their families, and twenty private passengers. The crew numbered 148. This narrative gives a terrifying account of the vessel catching fire in the Bay of Biscay and subsequently foundering. A second anonymous edition was published in 1842. It was followed by a third in 1859, which ientifies the author who signed the letter 'Servatus' as Lieutenant-General Sir Duncan Macgregor, KCB.

NMM Cat, Vol 5, Pt 1, entry 1799: The three appendices comprise: return of killed and wounded on board the British ships; ships and commanders of both fleets. AJS: The best contemporary account of the famous action off Cape St Vincent, in which four Spanish ships of the line, including two 112s, were taken. The accompanying plans, shewing the positions of both fleets at different stages in the action, are particularly interesting. Although published anonymously, the work was actually written by Colonel John Drinkwater-Bethune, better known for his history of the Siege of Gibraltar in the previous war. As a member of General Eliot's staff, Bethune was returning from the Mediterranean in a frigate when he became an eyewitness of the battle.

This work describes the crucial events of the summer of 1782, which culminated in the actions of Negapatam and Trincomalee and Suffren's seizure of Trincomalee. Included are valuable lists of the French warships engaged, their armament and commanders.

AJS: A contemporary account of Lord Howe's victory over the French fleet under Admiral Villaret-Joyeuse in the Glorious First of June action, 1794, and the events before and after. The work is enhanced by the large folding engraved plate which shews the dispositions and tactics of the opposing fleets during the course of the action. The text also contains a full list of officers on board each of the thirty-eight British ships present, from the flagship, Queen Charlotte, 100, to the Ranger, cutter.

xxviii + 577pp, portait frontis, 22 illus, original deocrated blue cloth. NMM Cat, Vol 2, entry 290: The author joined the Royal Navy in 1859 as a cadet at the Britannia Royal Naval College. Nine years later he was appointed to the Galatea and made a voyage round the world which lasted more than two and a half years. Between 1879 and 1881 Beresford commanded the royal yacht Osborne. With the gunboat Condor he played a prominent part during the bombardment of Alexandria the following year. In August 1884 he joined the Alexandra and served on Wolsey's staff during the Khartoum relief expedition. Afterwards he led the Naval Brigade on the Nile and took part in the battle of Abu Klea, January 17, 1885. The same year he also commanded the force that went to the of rescue Sir Charles Wilson in the Safia. As a Member of Parliament for East Marylebone he was appointed fourth naval lord of the Admiralty in 1886 but because of disagreements resigned in January 1888. Until December, 1889, when he was given command of the Undaunted, he was a constant critic of naval affairs in the House of Commons. Between 1903 and 1909 he commanded the Channel Squadron and was later appointed commander-in-chief of the Channel Fleet. This is a condensed edition from the original two volume set.
